Alabama movie star gushes about her favorite city (and it’s not her alma mater)
Wait, no “War Eagle” from Octavia Spencer?
The Oscar-winning actress, a Montgomery native and Auburn University graduate, has shared big love for her alma mater in the past. But when asked to showcase her favorite city for a new TV series, Spencer bypassed Tiger Town and chose New Orleans.
“Cheers to New Orleans,” Spencer, 55, says in a preview video for Sunday’s episode of “My Happy Place,” which airs at 9 p.m. CT on CNN. “The city literally has everything. There’s no other place like it.”
Spencer can be seen strolling through New Orleans in the clip, sipping coffee in a cafe, examining Mardi Gras floats and clapping along to music, presumably in a Big Easy nightclub. Another promo video for the episode finds the actress learning how to make a Hurricane, a popular and potent cocktail that’s a must for revelers in New Orleans.
“No wonder you get blizzard on these,” Spencer says, her eyes widening as she contemplates the idea of a drink with four shots of rum.
“My Happy Place” allows celebrities to highlight “cities that became their escapes, their home away from home and safe space,” according to CNN. “Octavia Spencer first came to New Orleans for Mardi Gras as a broke college student and has been hooked ever since.”
Sure, New Orleans is exciting and all, but plenty of viewers in Alabama would be thrilled to hear Spencer sing Auburn’s praises on the series, spreading the word about the university’s lovely campus, enticing restaurants, beloved gameday traditions — and, of course, the legendary lemonade at Toomer’s Drugs.
We’re not planning to hold a grudge against Spencer — at least, not for long — but next time, how about taking a camera crew to loveliest village on the Plains? Folks in Auburn know how to let the good times roll, especially when the Tigers win a football game.
