Child caught in crossfire during argument between adults in Dothan

A 36-year-old man is behind bars after a child was caught in crossfire in Dothan.

Octavenious Romarrio Thomas, 36, is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree attempted assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dothan 911 was notified by hospital officials that a child under the age of 12 was brought to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower body.

Investigators learned that two men were involved in a verbal altercation on Kristie Road. The verbal altercation then turned physical.

One of those men was Thomas, said Lt. Scott Owens.

As the other man and the juvenile were in their vehicle leaving the scene, Thomas and another man began shooting at the vehicle, Owens said.

The juvenile, who was not involved in the argument, was shot twice – including a graze wound. The child is expected to be OK.

Thomas was quickly taken into custody and booked into the Houston County Jail with bonds totaling $450,000.

Police said more charges are expected.

“This kind of indiscriminate violence will not be tolerated in the City of Dothan,” said Police Chief Will Benny. “Dangerous actions like these will have serious consequences.”
