Alabama ‘Survivor’ veteran returning for all-star 50th season in 2026
The first time an Alabama man appeared on “Survivor,” others in the cast referred to him as “Goliath,” “Thor” and “Aquaman” as he fought his way to a final-four result. Now he’s getting another shot.
Jonathan Young, who’s from the Gulf Shores area, competed in the 42nd season of “Survivor” in 2022. Now he’s among the cast of the show’s 50th season, which will premiere in Spring 2026. (The 48th season was won by Kyle Fraser on May 21; Season 49 will air this fall.)
Host Jeff Probst revealed the cast Wednesday on “CBS Mornings.” The 50th season will feature an all-star cast, including some players who’ve competed three or four times, so Young will be among many faces familiar to regular viewers. The lineup includes Jenna Lewis-Dougherty, Colby Donaldson, Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick, Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, Benjamin “Coach” Wade, Aubry Bracco, Chrissy Hofbeck, Christian Hubicki, Angelina Keeley, Mike White, Rick Devens, Dee Valladares, Emily Flippen, Q Burdette, Tiffany Ervin, Charlie Davis, Genevieve Mushaluk, Kamilla Karthigesu, Kyle Fraser and Joseph Hunter. It’ll also feature two competitors from the upcoming Season 49.
The season is titled “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans.” According to CBS, that reflects the decision to put some features to a fan vote.
“Earlier this year, fans voted on key elements of the game, including ‘Idols or No Idols,’ ‘Final Four Fire Making: Keep It or Lose It’ and ‘Live Finale and Reunion Show in L.A.’ – or Keep the Winner Reveal and Aftershow in the Jungles of Fiji,” CBS said in a season announcement. “The players won’t know what the fans voted for until they are competing on the island.”
Young’s physical prowess was both a strength and a liability in 2022. His strength and agility made him an asset in many team immunity challenges, particularly those that took place in the water – but looking strong in “Survivor” can lead others to see you as a threat.
“I think I did have a big target on my back because I was more of a physical threat,” he told AL.com after the season finale aired. “That helped me and it hurt me.”
Young said he lost “about a pound a day” during the experience, for a total of more than 20 pounds. But he said at the time that he was game for a return. “I’ve made it clear to everybody that if I get the chance to go back on ‘Survivor’ I’ll be there,” he told AL.com in a 2022 interview. “It’s like an itch that can’t be scratched. Because it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Straight up. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
