‘Hoo, mercy!’: Chris Stewart’s call on final play of Alabama-Texas A&M is must-hear

Chris Stewart encapsulated how every Alabama football fan felt the moment the clock hit zero and the Crimson Tide escaped Bryant-Denny Stadium with a stressful 24-20 victory over Texas A&M Saturday.

After failing to convert for a first down with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter, the Tide punted to the Aggies who needed a touchdown to win the game. Jimbo Fisher’s team marched all the way down to Alabama’s 2-yard line with three seconds left before Haynes King threw an incomplete pass to receiver Evan Stewart with Terrion Arnold in coverage.

The majority of the 100,000 fans inside the stadium exhaled and promptly exited through gridlocked tunnels with midnight just a few ticks away. What most of them didn’t hear at the moment was the Crimson Tide Sports Network’s broadcast, led by play-by-play commentator Chris Stewart’s amazing, if a little stressed, call on the final play.

“It is incomplete!” Stewart belted. “Zeroes on the clock! Ball game! No flags! Alabama wins! Let’s get outta here!”

He took a few seconds as the crowd’s eruption told the story before reflecting on the Tide’s latest victory.

“At the end of the year, they don’t ask you how, they simply ask you how many. And this is a big one for the Crimson Tide, as Alabama holds off the fightin’ Texas Aggies — 24-20 is your final. Hoo, mercy!”

“Never a doubt, Chris!” color commentator and former Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson said, facetiously. “Never a doubt.”

Alabama announced in August that Eli Gold, the longtime voice of the Crimson Tide, would be sidelined to start the season due to health issues. Stewart, the play-by-play man for Alabama basketball and other sports, has taken his seat in the booth. Stewart even paid special tribute to Gold during Alabama’s first touchdown of the 2022 season.

Gold appeared on the Crimson Tide Sports Network broadcast of the Alabama-Texas game in September, to update fans on his health. He said he has lost 100 pounds and has been absent from the broadcast dealing with a medical issue. “I wanted to take a moment to point out I’m not sick,” Gold said on the broadcast. “Well, some people may perceive that. I’m not sick. I have orthopedic issues. A lot of people who have seen me at baseball games, football games, whatever, know that I have had trouble getting around the last couple of years. It was time to get that taken care of.”
