Memorial Day is a time set aside to honor those who lost their lives in the service of their country.
The origins of Memorial Day date back to after the Civil War when the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers were decorated each May as part of what was then known as Remembrance Day. After World War I, the practice was expanded to honor all those who died in American Wars.

In 1950, Congress adopted a joint resolution designating May 11 as Memorial Day. It was later moved to the last Monday in May in 1971 in keeping with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday, so government offices, banks and financial markets are closed.
The U.S. Post Office is also closed and mail will not run on Monday.
Memorial Day is the fourth postal service holiday of the year. Post offices were already closed for New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and Presidents Day.
