The practice continued through 1966 when Memorial Day was officially declared a holiday. It was moved to the fourth Monday in May by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which went into effect in 1971.
Unofficial start of summer
While Memorial Day is a holiday to remember members of the armed forces who died while in service, it has also become the unofficial start of summer. The day has become a popular time for cookouts, barbecues and family gatherings.
If you’re one of those hosting or attending a holiday gathering, you may need to run by the store for some food, drinks or more. If so, you’re in luck as the nation’s largest retailer is open on Memorial Day.
Walmart stores are open regular hours on Memorial Day – typically 6 a.m.-11 p.m. It’s always a good idea to check ahead and to make sure all services are available.
Walmart-owned Sam’s Club will also be open Memorial Day. Its hours will be 8 a.m.-6 p.m. for Plus Members and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. for Club members.
