Earthquake detected off coast of Gulf Shores

An earthquake occurred 70 miles south of the Gulf Coast Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was measured at a 3.1 magnitude on the Richter scale meaning it was on the smaller end of possible earthquakes.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was detected at about 2:40 p.m. and had a depth of approximately six miles.

In 2023, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake occurred about 130 miles south of Orange Beach.
