Make these changes to your mailbox right now, US Postal Service urges
The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to take this week to pay attention to the key portal for receiving important information: mailboxes.
National Mailbox Improvement Week is May 18-24 and that’s the time people should inspect their mailbox and perform any maintenance. In some cases, people should upgrade and replace their existing mailboxes.
“Customer’s mailboxes are the first point of contact for receiving birthday cards, letters, and important documents,” said Acting Postmaster and CEO Doug Tulino. “A well-maintained mailbox helps to ensure that every package and parcel makes it to its intended destination safely and efficiently.”
What should people look for when checking their mailboxes?
Here are some USPS suggestions:
- Replace loose hinges
- Repair a mailbox if it’s rusted or started to peel
- Remount a loosened mailbox post
- Replace or add house numbers
- Keep the path to your mailbox clear

Extra-large mailboxes
The USPS also recommends larger mailboxes to help keep packages safe. These boxes are 14 inches wide, 7.75 inches tall on the sides and 12 inches tall at the center and 17 inches deep. They it on a standard post.
The extra-large mailboxes are available at many national retailers including Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe’s.
What about mailbox security?
Tips to secure your mail include:
• Promptly pick up your mail: Try not to leave letters and packages in your mailbox or at your door for any length of time.
• Report mailbox vandalism: If you see someone actively tampering with a mailbox, immediately report it to the police.
