Work begins on $80 million job training center in Jasper
Work is beginning on an $80 million job training facility in Jasper which should be ready for students in the fall of 2026.
The Heman Drummond Center of Innovation (HDCI) will be located at 3515 Industrial Way in Jasper’s Industrial Park and is being described as a first of its kind educational facility to prepare students for tech careers.
With more than 200,000-square-feet, the center will be able to serve about 2,100 high school students, offering training in cyber IT, robotics, healthcare, automotive and construction capabilities.
In addition to hands-on learning with advanced tools, students will be able to earn industry certifications and take college-level technical courses, leading to mentorships, apprenticeships and internships.
The project exemplifies the state of Alabama’s current emphasis on job training and workforce readiness. Earlier this year, the state’s Department of Labor officially changed its name to Department of Workforce.
“Not only is it going to change thousands of lives, but it will also open its doors at exactly the right time. Alabama is seeing tremendous growth in good jobs, but we need more highly trained workers,” Gov. Kay Ivey said.
The Walker Area Community Foundation is building the HDCI and currently owns the building and property. Upon substantial completion, the Foundation will transfer it to the Walker County School System, which will own and operate it.
The center will also offer specialized academies for coding, cybersecurity, digital media and biotechnology.
“HDCI represents a bold step forward in preparing the next generation for success in an ever-evolving job market,” Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed said.
Students will earn industry-recognized certifications and credentials in various fields, providing a competitive edge in the job market and a strong foundation for future studies. Programs will be tailored to meet the needs of high-demand careers. In addition, students will have the opportunity to pursue college level technical coursework, developing skills that lead to certifications or the ability to transition smoothly to higher education.
HDCI will foster connections between students and industry professionals through apprenticeships, internships, mentorship programs, guest lectures, and networking events. This exposure will help students gain insights into potential career paths and develop professional skills and networks. Students will work on interdisciplinary projects that promote teamwork and creative thinking and challenge them to innovate and apply their knowledge in practical, real-world scenarios.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, the incubator will offer resources and support to develop business ideas, including workshops on business planning, marketing, and finance.
The HDCI will also actively engage with local businesses and organizations, creating opportunities for internships, job shadowing, and community service projects that enrich students’ learning experiences.
To date, 85% of the total funding needed for the HDCI has been raised. The remaining 15% is being pursued through continued fundraising efforts, including community support, grants, and private partnerships.
