Birmingham man sentenced to prison for Shelby County armed robbery in which $84K in sporting goods taken

A Birmingham man has been sentenced for his role in the 2022 robbery in Shelby County.

U.S. District Court Judge Madeline H. Haikala sentenced Mario Autwun Scott, 42, to 45 months – nearly four years – in federal prison, said Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona.

Scott pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and interference with commerce by threats or violence.

Michael Anthony Pippens, 42, of Birmingham, Scott’s co-conspirator in the robbery, was previously sentenced to 30 months in prison. Pippens pleaded guilty to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery earlier this year.

According to court documents, the robbery happened in 2022.

Scott robbed the Hibbett Sports Distribution Center in Shelby County at gunpoint,stealing two trailers full of sporting goods merchandise worth over $84,000.

Prior to the robbery, Pippens provided a box truck to Scott so that he could transport the stolen goods.

The stolen semi-truck was later found in Birmingham.

The FBI investigated the case along with the Alabaster Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Darius C. Greene and Lloyd C. Peeples prosecuted the case.
