Alabama storms injure 2 people: Latest on damage, power outages across the state
Officials in counties throughout north and east central Alabama spent first light Wednesday morning fanning out to determine the extent of damage from storms Tuesday.
Power poles and trees were reported down in multiple communities, snarling traffic and cleanup efforts.
As of 8 a.m., about 8,000 people were without electricity according to Alabama Power. Huntsville Utilities is reporting nearly 4,500 people without power.
Athens Utilities reported there are still around 5,000 without power currently, according to the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency.
Drivers in Limestone County are urged avoid the areas of Highway 72 and Lucas Ferry Road and Sanderfer Road.
“Please allow yourself extra time in the event that you may have to reroute on your normal travels as there may be road blockages or out of the ordinary traffic congestion,” Limestone County EMA said.
In Colbert County, two people were injured, according to WHNT. Citing Colbert County EMA, the state reported a child was injured when a tree fell on her home, and a driver was hospitalized after a tree fell on their car on Reservation Road.
Marshall County EMA in Guntersville reported a lightning strike which affected its outdoor warning siren controller.
“Once we got everything repaired it sounded the sirens again when everything came back on line,” the agency said in a social media post. “Sorry for them sounding once the warning was over.”
There was widespread damage in Calhoun County. In Ohatchee, a large tree on Mudd Street struck a vehicle, injuring the occupants. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police. The tree also obstructing the roadway, taking power lines with it.
In Piedmont, downed trees and powerlines blocked areas of South Main Street and Piedmont Avenue.
In Rainbow City in Etowah County, a single vehicle accident caused by a downed tree and powerlines. There were no injuries reported.
There was also a downed tree and power lines on Alabama 77.
Downed trees were also reported in Morgan County in parts of Danville, Baileyton, Union Grove, Priceville and Hartselle.
