A Birmingham businessman was recently tapped to lead a national youth nonprofit dedicated to youth development.
Ron Houston was named new president and chief executive officer of INROADS, an Atlanta-based organization that promotes youth leadership, career readiness and real-world learning.
Houston is also a trustee for the Alabama Community College System and the Alabama Workforce Board.
“As we look to the future, I am committed to listening, learning, and leading in partnership with our staff, students, alumni, corporate partners, and supporters,” Houston said. “Together, we will build on the rich history of INROADS and continue forging new pathways of opportunity for generations to come.”
Houston takes over after the recent retirement of Forest T. Harper Jr., who led the organization for more than 14 years. Houston’s 30-year career spans banking, finance, and strategic planning.
In his most recent role as president and CEO of HRG Consulting, Houston advised both nonprofit and for-profit organizations on business strategy, fundraising and operational effectiveness.
He also served as executive director of Metroplex Economic Development Corporation, the nonprofit organization of the Potter’s House of Dallas. The Potter’s House was founded by recently retired pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes.
“His commitment to expanding educational and economic opportunity, his proven ability to align corporate engagement with mission-driven outcomes, and his track record of innovation and community impact make him the ideal leader to guide INROADS into its next era of growth and impact,” said Reba T. Simmons, chair of the INROADS board of directors.
Since its founding in 1970 INROADS has helped more than 174,000 leaders with pre-employment skills and graduated more than 40,000 alumni into full-time professional positions.
Houston also serves on the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Arts Alliance Advisory Board and the TechBirmingham board of directors.
Houston holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Pepperdine University, and an MBA from the University of Kansas. He is completing his doctorate in educational leadership, policy, and law at Alabama State University.
