A 64-year-old Madison County man is in jail Monday charged with the murder of his wife Sunday night.

According to sheriff’s office spokesman Brent Patterson, deputies were called to a residence in the 200 block of Steppe Court on a shooting call Sunday evening.

They found a woman inside the residence with multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where she later died.

Gary Robert Wharton is being held without bond in the Madison County Jail. He has been charged with murder involving family domestic violence and a gun.
