After missing last year’s title game, Orange Beach star ends Makos career with championship win

Daigle Wilson remembers the emotion of walking into last year’s state championship game without her softball bag.

Knocked unconscious and left with a broken nose after taking a ground ball to the face in the winners bracket final one day prior, she played the role of cheerleader as her teammates claimed their fourth straight softball championship.

When recalling that day, a key memory for her is the support from her teammates.

“They’re the best. They support me,” she said. “Last year, they supported me through everything. They had my back, they picked me up. We’re just a team where we love each other and we love to win.”

Thursday’s 9-2 victory was more than a memorable one for Wilson, who was able to take the field this year and lead her team to another Class 4A championship in what was her final game as a Mako.

“It was hard,” the Auburn signee said of last season, “but this year it was a lot of emotion, especially being a senior. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Wilson batted 5-for-14 (.357) and crossed home plate seven times during Orange Beach’s state tournament stay, knocking in three doubles against West Blocton in the opener on Wednesday.

The fifth straight state title tied for the state record, with Pisgah also winning five consecutive championships from 2001-2005.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Wilson said after the victory over Curry. “We have the best people here, the best coaches, and they’re just so amazing. They make it fun and that’s what’s just so enjoyable about this program and this team.”

When asked about Wilson and being able to play in the championship this season, one of the words that came to mind for coach Shane Alexander was “humble.”

“We talked about it earlier; last year she was banged up, and we were figuring out if she could courtesy run, but she couldn’t even see the bases,” the Orange Beach coach said. “To see her go off like this, she’s a phenomenal kid and she’s been raised right.”

Daigle is in a group of four seniors, alongside Justine Henderson, KG Favors and Kaitlynn Robertson, who made the fourth straight state title that much more special for the rest of with the program.

“This was very important for our seniors, especially since they’ve been here since the beginning,” third baseman Katie King said. “We wanted to get that five in a row to make our history, and we did it. That’s what makes this one extra special.”

A spot on Auburn’s softball team awaits Wilson, who is set to leave behind a strong legacy during her multi-time all-state career in Baldwin County.

“I’m super excited,” she said. “Auburn, they’re great. The coaches are great, they’re awesome and I’m just so excited to be there.”

But, Orange Beach High will always be another home.

“This is my favorite place,” she smiled. “I love these people, I love Orange Beach softball. I never want to leave. I wish I could be here forever.”
