Poll results: Latest presidential approval ratings are good news for Trump

Opinions on President Donald Trump’s handling of his job are improving, according to the latest poll.

A May 13 poll from Reuters/Ipsos shows 44% of respondents approve of the job Trump is doing, up from 42% from the previous poll conducted April 25-27. Both polls had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

The latest figure remains below the numbers Trump enjoyed at the start of his term, when he had a 47% approval rating.

The improving numbers come as inflation has cooled somewhat with prices rising 0.2% between March and April after a modest decline the previous month. For consumers, the biggest benefits were declines in both gasoline and grocery prices.

Economic improvements translated to an uptick in numbers for Trump.

Approval of Trump’s economic stewardship rose from 36% to 39%, according to the poll. While still high, fewer people are concerned about a recession – 69% in the latest poll compared to 76% in the Reuters poll conducted April 16-21. Fifty-nine percent said it would be Trump’s fault if the economy falls into recession this year, compared to 37% who said they would blame former President Joe Biden.

The share who said they were worried about stock market performance fell from 67% to 60%. Eighty-percent said they were concerned about inflation, down 7 percentage points from the previous poll.
