Alabama mother ‘smelled strongly of alcohol’ after crash killed her 5-year-old son, trooper said

An Alabama mother was allegedly drunk when she crashed into a tree resulting in the death of her 5-year-old child, according to court documents.

The night of May 6, Cheryl Lynn, of Citronelle, was driving a 2011 Honda Accord on U.S. Route 45 with her three children as passengers.

The children were ages 5,7 and 1.

At about 9:17 p.m., Lynn veered off the road and hit a tree.

According to court documents, the 5-year-old child was not wearing a child restraint and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He sustained blunt force trauma to the head and died from his injuries.

The other two children were transported to a local hospital and the infant was in critical condition, court records said.

Testimony from a state trooper following the incident alleged that Lynn, “smelled strongly of alcohol.”

“The driver of the vehicle showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests,” the trooper said. “The driver smelled strongly of alcohol, has glossy red eyes, and slurred speech.”

Lynn was arrested and charged with manslaughter and given a bond of $100,000.

Her stipulations if she bonds out include being prohibited from driving, no contact with her children, house arrest, weekly alcohol and drug testing and the surrender of her driver’s license.
