Alabama social media star makes big leap to largest concert venue in his hometown: ‘Shut up!’

Matt Mathews, a fast-rising comedian and social media star from Alabama, has announced a show at the largest concert venue in his hometown.

Mathews is set to perform on Dec. 29 at the Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham. The date is part of his “Boujee on a Budget” tour, which runs through the end of the year.

Tickets for the Birmingham show go on sale Friday, May 16, at 10 a.m. CT via Ticketmaster. Prices will range from $30.50 to $70.50, plus fees, according to promoter Live Nation.

Pre-sales for the Birmingham show are underway and run through Thursday, May 15, at 10 p.m. CT. (Password to unlock the BJCC pre-sale is BJCC25.) Premium seats and VIP packages are listed on Ticketmaster along with standard admission; these were priced from $160 to $238.50 on Wednesday during the pre-sale.

It’s a big leap for Mathews, who made his live comedy debut in December 2022 at the Comedy Club Stardome in Hoover. He first earned fans with funny “farm chores” videos on social media and quickly added stand-up shows to his repertoire.

Mathews, 32, has seen his fame grow over the past few years, performing in comedy clubs and theaters across the country and doing a few dates overseas. Along with his appearances at the Stardome, the Birmingham native previously played here at the Alabama Theatre, selling out two shows at the 2,500-capacity venue in 2024.

“We sold out the Alabama Theater twice last year, so (my team was) like, ‘Let’s go to the arena.’ And I was like, ‘Shut up!’” Mathews said in an interview with AL.com. “It was very special to me to end my tour last year at the Alabama Theatre, and now I get to end this tour back home again at the arena, playing my first arena show in my hometown. So that’s really exciting.”

Capacity at Legacy Arena varies for concerts, depending on the placement of the stage, use of the floor area and the number of seating tiers open to audience members. It’s unclear exactly how many tickets will be available for Mathews’ show at the arena, but he’s likely to face his largest audience to date.

Birmingham has two stadiums with greater capacities for concerts: Protective Stadium, which can hold about 45,000 people, and Legion Field, with a capacity of about 71,000. The stadiums are mostly used for sports events, however, with occasional concerts booked along the way.

Mathews’ agenda for 2025 also includes shows at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville (Dec. 27); the Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth, Texas (Nov. 20) and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga, Tenn. (Nov. 15). See the full list of tour dates here.

Mathews announced his new tour dates with a comic video that finds him in full “farm chores” regalia — a bathrobe and boots — while fussing at the animals at his 105-acre ranch in Jefferson County. (Watch it below.)

The ambitious comedian also launched a music career this year, releasing two country-folk singles in April, “Joke’s on Me” and “What a War,” and promising fans a self-titled album in late May. Mathews will showcase his music on May 15 with a sold-out concert at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham.
