Road, beach closures in effect for Sand in My Boots festival
With Morgan Wallen’s first-ever Sand in My Boots Festival due to open Friday in Gulf Shores, road and beach closures stepped up on Monday.
The festival takes place Friday through Sunday, May 16-18. It’s being presented as a one-year “takeover” of the familiar Hangout Music Festival, with a country-oriented lineup and features curated by Wallen. Sand in My Boots uses essentially the same footprint as the Hangout Fest, and Gulf Shores previously approved a Public Assembly Permit allowing the same 40,000 daily attendance.
The coastal city released a reminder Monday morning of the planned changes:
Monday, May 12
Public Parking at Gulf Place closes.
Public beach access at Gulf Place closes.
Tuesday, May 13
U.S. 59 south of West 1st Avenue and Ala. 182 will be closed to all vehicular/pedestrian traffic.
Beach Boulevard will be closed to all vehicular/pedestrian traffic between West 2nd Street and East 2nd Street.
Access to West Beach Boulevard from U.S. 59 is available through Windmill Ridge Road (preferred), or by taking West 1st Avenue to West 3rd Street, or by taking West 2nd Avenue to west 2nd Street.
Access to Orange Beach from U.S. 59 is available through Gulf State Park; by taking Canal Road; or by taking East 1st Avenue to East 2nd Street, East 3rd Street or East 4th Street.
Traffic flow on East 1st Avenue and East 2nd Avenue will be modified to a one-way-only route to help accommodate heavy pedestrian traffic. Two-way traffic flow will remain on East 1st Street, East 2nd Street, East 3rd Street, and East 4th Street.
The public is advised to be aware of signage posted in these areas indicating proper traffic flow during this time.
Saturday, May 15
• Ala. 182 will be closed to all vehicular/pedestrian traffic between West 2nd Street and West 3rd Street.
Tuesday, May 20
All traffic will return to normal.
Thursday, May 22
All beaches and beach access points will reopen by 6 p.m.
