Discount retail giant reopening four Alabama stores
In its second round this month, discount retailer Big Lots is set to reopen four more Alabama locations.
Months after declaring bankruptcy, the retail chain reached a deal with Gordon Brothers that would keep hundreds of its stores and distribution centers open.
Under the agreement, Variety Wholesalers Inc., would acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores as well as two distribution centers and operate them under the Big Lots brand.
Variety Wholesalers announced in December it would reopen as many as 219 locations.
The reopenings, which started May 1, will take place in four waves through June, as AL.com previously reported.
Nine Alabama locations in total are expected to reopen.
Customers will experience remodeled stores, closeout deals and new merchandise, the company said.
The first wave included four Alabama stores in Mobile, Athens, Decatur and Dothan.
According to a list Variety Wholesales provided to Nexstar, another 70 stores are slated to reopen on May 15, including the following Alabama locations:
ALABAMA | 14228 US HIGHWAY 431, GUNTERSVILLE | 5/15/25 |
ALABAMA | 1619 TOWN SQ SW, CULLMAN | 5/15/25 |
ALABAMA | 5510 MCFARLAND BLVD, NORTHPORT | 5/15/25 |
ALABAMA | 1100 HWY 78 W, JASPER | 5/15/25 |
“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” said Lisa Seigies, the president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, in a press release.
“We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.”
