Storm surveys planned for south Alabama today
Several rounds of storms left damage behind, and the National Weather Service plans to see whether tornadoes are to blame for some of it.
The weather service offices that cover south Alabama plan to look at damage in two separate places today after a stormy weekend.
The weather service office in Mobile said a storm survey team planned to look at damage in southern Mobile County sometime today.
Storms early Saturday morning caused considerable damage on Dauphin Island, according to officials.
The weather service issued a tornado warning for that area around 2:45 a.m. Saturday.
The weather service office in Tallahassee, Fla., which covers part of southeast Alabama, also said it plans to send a storm survey team today to southeastern Geneva County to look at storm damage there. That storm also tracked through the Florida Panhandle before reaching Alabama.
The storm survey teams will look at damage and determine whether it was caused by tornadoes or straight-line winds.
If a tornado is confirmed it will be given a preliminary rating using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which runs from EF-0 to EF-5.
Both weather service offices said they will release details on what the survey teams find when that information is available, likely not until later this afternoon or tonight.
There is a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather again today for parts of eastern Alabama, but tornadoes are not expected.
