2 Alabama bakeries get Garden & Gun shout-out for their gluten-free goods
No gluten is no problem for two Alabama bakeries that were recently spotlighted by Garden and Gun magazine as among the best in the South for those going gluten-free.
As part of its “Seven Southern” series, Garden and Gun highlighted seven bakeries throughout the South that stand out thanks to their gluten-free menu options, and two of them — Mason Dixon Bakery and Bistro in Huntsville and Guncles Gluten Free in Mobile — call Alabama home.

Mason Dixon Bakery and Bistro in Huntsville got its start in 2013 when Ashley Ramirez, who has celiac disease, began experimenting with gluten-free baking. Today, the popular bakery offers a variety of gluten-free goods baked daily, from breads to cupcakes, muffins, cookies, custom cakes and more. Ramirez estimated they sell around 1,000 of their buttermilk biscuit each week, according to Garden and Gun.
Meanwhile, Guncles Gluten Free Bakery in Mobile was created by John Edward McGee after he was diagnosed with a rare wheat allergy. In 2018, McGee, who studied gluten-free baking in San Francisco, opened Guncles with his husband, Demetrius James, and began serving award-winning gluten-free cakes, breads, cookies, biscuits and seasonal treats and more. Can’t make it to Mobile? The beloved bakery also ships its goods nationwide.
Other bakeries that made Garden and Gun’s list are Dora’s Bakery & Bistro in Coral Gables, Fla.; Hell Yeah Gluten Free in Atlanta; The Accidental Baker in Charlotte; Caroline’s Cakes in Spartanburg, S.C.; and Heavenly Hands Bakery in Metairie, La.
