Jalen Hurts finishes as runner-up for the NFL MVP Award

Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts finished as the runner-up for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award for the 2022 season.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won the award on Thursday night for the second time. Mahomes also received honor for the 2018 season.

Hurts and Mahomes will be on opposite sides of the field in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, when the Philadelphia Eagles square off against the Chiefs in the NFL championship game.

Mahomes received 48 of the first-place votes from the panel of 50 selectors. He also got two second-place votes to total 490 points, with first-place votes worth 10 points, second-place votes worth five points, third-place votes worth three points, fourth-place votes worth two points and fifth-place votes worth one point.

Hurts totaled 193 points as he received one first-place, 26 second-place, 11 third-place and 10 fourth-place votes. Two of the selectors did not include Hurts on their ballots.

The other first-place vote went to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who finished third. In addition to his first-place vote, Allen had 11 second-place, 19 third-place, 12 fourth-place and five fifth-place votes for 151 points.

Fifteen players and Denny Kellington, the assistant athletic trainer for the Buffalo Bills, received votes for the AP NFL MVP Award. Kellington performed CPR on Damar Hamlin after Bills safety’s heart stopped during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and he received one fifth-place vote.

Three other players with Alabama football roots appeared on MVP ballots. Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry (Alabama) and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (West Alabama) and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) received one fifth-place vote apiece.

Four players from Alabama high schools and colleges have won the AP NFL Most Valuable Player Award, which has been presented annually since 1957. Those winners have been Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr (Sidney Lanier, Alabama) in 1966, Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler (Foley, Alabama) in 1974, Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander (Alabama) in 2005 and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (Auburn) in 2015.
