AHSAA state soccer: Vestavia Hills girls, Montgomery Academy boys advance on penalty kicks

The Class 6A and 7A state semifinals are underway in Huntsville, with teams looking to repeat and others looking for their first state titles.

Thursday’s winners will advance to the 6A and 7A state championship games on Saturday.

CLASS 7A GIRLS

Auburn 3, McGill-Toolen 0

The defending Class 7A champion is one win away from a repeat.

Class 7A No. 2 Auburn picked up a shutout of No. 5 McGill-Toolen on Thursday to punch its ticket to the state championship game; the Tigers will face No. 1 Vestavia Hills on Saturday for the state title.

Camilla Bosman tacked on a pair of goals for Auburn, while Lula Hammer added a goal of her own as the Tigers applied 11 shots on goal; Bosman led the team with 6 in the win.

Mattie McDonald had the lone shot on goal for McGill-Toolen.

Vestavia Hills 2, James Clemens 1 (2 OT, Vestavia Hills wins in PKs)

Class 7A’s No. 1-ranked team claimed a thriller to advance to the Class 7A state title game.

Vestavia Hills outlasted No. 4 James Clemens in the Class 7A state semifinals on Thursday with a set of penalty kicks after two overtime periods being the equalizer in the matchup.

The Rebels will face defending 7A champion Auburn in the title game on Saturday.

Kelsey Redden, Cameron Dickerson, Kendall Roberts and Katie Llewellyn all found the back of the net for Vestavia Hills in the shootout while Olivia Lawrence, Amelia Mitchell, and Haddie Patterson made goals for James Clemens.

In regulation, Emma Listi scored 11:57 in the matchup on a defensive turnover to put Vestavia Hills up 1-0 in the first.

James Clemens’ goal came from Olivia Lawrence 63:37 into the matchup; Lawrence had a game-high 11 shots in the loss for the Jets, 7 being on goal.

Vestavia Hills’ Addison Mizerany had 5 shots and was one of three players with 2 shots on goal for the Rebels.

CLASS 7A BOYS

Oak Mountain 2, Grissom 1

Class 7A No. 1 Oak Mountain will look to defend its state title following a semifinal victory over No. 6 Grissom on Thursday.

Oak Mountain will face Montgomery Academy in the state championship game on Saturday.

Sam Collins and Roy Soldevilla both scored for Oak Mountain, which had 8 shots on goal in the victory over Grissom.

Nate Spellman had the Tigers’ goal in the victory and added 2 shots on goal in the loss.

Montgomery Academy 3, Fairhope 2 (2 OT, Montgomery Academy wins in PKs)

Class 7A No. 8 Montgomery Academy held off Fairhope in a thriller on Friday to advance to the Class 7A state title game.

The Eagles will face No. 1 Oak Mountain on Saturday for the state title.

Jacob Stubblefield and Cde Seagars both had goals for Montgomery Academy, which applied 13 shots on goal in the victory; Hampton Welch and Brewer Welch both logged assists in the win.

Patrick Burns scored for Fairhope with the Pirates first getting on the board after a corner kick with 11:22 into the game.
