Downtown Huntsville, Inc., CEO stepping down later this month

Downtown Huntsville, Inc., is once again searching for a new leader.

The organization announced Thursday that President and CEO Rob Buddo will be stepping down on May 23.

DHI said Buddo is pursuing a new opportunity in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, that aligns closely with his passion for economic development and regional impact.

Buddo had been CEO and president since 2022, taking over for Chad Emerson, who stepped down to become managing director for business operations for Huntsville’s then new minor league soccer team, Huntsville City Football Club.

“This next chapter is both professional and personal,” Buddo said in a news release. “I’m excited to return home and continue working in economic development at a regional level. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished at DHI, and grateful to have worked with such a committed team and community.”

Since joining DHI in 2022, Buddo has played a pivotal role in strengthening the organization’s impact, sharpening its strategic direction, and laying the groundwork for continued success, organization said. It said his leadership brought clarity, data-driven decision-making, and a renewed focus on outcomes that benefit downtown stakeholders and the broader community.

“Rob helped shape where we are today,” said Mark Russell, board chairman of Downtown Huntsville, Inc. “He led the organization through a critical period of growth and evolution, and we’re thankful for the vision and stability he brought to the role. He leaves DHI in a strong position to continue moving forward.”

Under Buddo’s leadership, DHI:

  • Launched downtown broker tours to showcase available office space and attract investment
  • Commissioned a downtown office survey to inform developers and stakeholders
  • Streamlined marketing to focus on measurable engagement and results
  • Reimagined public events and activations based on community feedback
  • Demonstrated downtown’s broad impact through district-specific data, earning strong support from city leaders

The organization’s executive team, with support from the board of directors, will lead the leadership transition and begin the process of identifying new executive leadership, it said in a news release.

“In the interim, the organization remains focused on implementing its 2025 marketing strategy, growing member engagement, and supporting a vibrant, inclusive downtown Huntsville,” the organization said.

DHI is now accepting applications for its next president and CEO.
