Alabama State Trooper shoots man to death after chase, officials say
A 33-year-old man was fatally shot by an Alabama state trooper following a vehicle pursuit and foot chase in Bullock County.
ALEA officials on Wednesday identified the man as Jemmie Earl Hicks Jr. He lived in Midway.
Just after noon Tuesday, a trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop on a 2013 Infiniti G37 on Alabama Highway 51, said ALEA Lt. Jeremy Burkett.
The driver – later identified as Hicks – refused to stop and a pursuit ensued.
The chase eventually came to a stop on Bullock County 106 near Flower Garden Road, where authorities say Hicks exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.
“Subsequently, the foot pursuit led into a deadly force encounter between Hicks and the ALEA Trooper,” Burkett said.
“Over the course of the incident, Hicks was injured by gunfire and the trooper immediately rendered first aid.”
However, Burkett said, Hicks died on the scene.
No other details were released.
Burkett said the investigation is ongoing.
Court records show Hicks in 2022 pleaded guilty to second-degree assault – a reduced charge from attempted murder – in a domestic shooting that left a woman with gunshot wound to the head.
He was sentenced to 60 months in prison, with two years to serve.
