AISA baseball finals: No. 1 Lakeside sweeps past Patrician in dramatic fashion

Carson Scott hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift top-ranked Lakeside Academy to the AISA Class A state title at Paterson Field in Montgomery on Wednesday.

The Chiefs (53-6) won the nightcap 5-4 after shutting out Patrician 9-0 in the opener.

With the game tied 4-4 and 1 out in the bottom of the seventh, Scott took a 1-1 pitch from Bryson Wheeler over the left-field fence for the game winner.

Luke McGowan got the win for Lakeside with two innings of scoreless relief. Boston Brown started. He went 5 innings, allowing 4 unearned runs on 4 hits. He struck out 9.

Scott finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Brown was also 2-for-3. Demetrius Hardnett was 1-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored.

Ethan Carr was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples from Patrician (17-19). Benji Barber drove in two runs.

In the opener, Hardnett pitched a 3-hitter and struck out 14. He walked just one. Matthew Mize took the loss for Patrician, allowing 8 runs on 7 hits in 3.2 innings. Only one of the runs Mize gave up was earned.

The Chiefs scored a run in the top of the first and then broke the game open with seven in the fourth. Tyler Mark Bullock and Trent Hayes each had 2 hits and 3 RBIs for coach Tony Rasmus’ team. Mize had 2 of Patrician’s 3 hits.
