Beloved Alabama coach among 2 killed in horrific crash; truck driver charged with manslaughter
A beloved Alabama high school football coach was among two people killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash.
Woodie Earl Beck III, 53, and Ashley Marie Springer McDonald, 37, were pronounced dead on the scene of the Thomasville wreck.
Beck was an assistant football coach, head softball coach and a physical education teacher at Wilcox Academy in Camden.
The wreck happened at 11:51 a.m. Tuesday when Thomasville police say four vehicles were stopped at a red light in the southbound lanes of Highway 43 at the intersection of South Industrial Park Drive when a loaded semi-truck and trailer crashed into the four stopped vehicles.
Four other people were taken to the hospital and later released.
According to police, the semi-truck is owned by 4 US Transportation out of Chicago, and was occupied by two Pennsylvania men who are in the U.S. on work visas – driver Andril Dmytarko, 45, and passenger Denys Kucher, 31.
Dmytarko is charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter. He is being held in the Clarke County Jail. Details surrounding the criminal charges have not been released.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be added. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the crash.
“I want to first offer my prayers to the families that experience great loss due to this careless act,” said Thomasville Police Chief Mitchell Stuckey, who asked for prayers for the families.
There has been an outpouring of condolences for Beck.
“He was loved by man and had a tremendous impact on the lives of young student-athletes,” according to a social media post from The Alabama Independent School Association.
Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day in a Facebook post also asked for prayers for the families, as well as for first responders.
“Please say a special prayer for our firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s deputies, medics, and all who were on the scene,” Day wrote. “I have been a fireman for over 40 years. This is one of the worst accidents we have ever worked in the City of Thomasville during my career.”
“Each of our first responders need your prayers,” the mayor wrote. “They are on the front line and did a tremendously professional job today. However, during the process of working an accident like this we see things you cannot unsee. This accident will forever be etched in their minds.”
Beck’s wife, Tiffany, is the manager of The Pecan Downtown, a gourmet restaurant in Camden. The restaurant posted this on Facebook:
“Woodie was a friend to us all, always willing to help out whenever and wherever we needed him! He loved Miss Tina and Miss Linda’s lunches. He was so kind to brag and let them know every time it was the best! His sweet smile, humble personality, love for children and his wife was apparent every time he walked in the door. Please pray for the Beck family.“
