AHSAA baseball: Mars Hill, Vincent split in 2A; Bibb County sweeps Oak Grove
Top-ranked Vincent rallied twice to stay alive in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 2A state baseball playoff semifinals on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets beat No. 7 Mars Hill Bible 14-6 in Game 2 after falling 3-1 in the opener at Vincent.
The Yellow Jackets (31-7) and Mars Hill (23-14) are scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. on Wednesday to decide who advances to the state finals. The Panthers eliminated Vincent in the quarterfinals last season and are looking to return to the championship series after falling 2 games to 1 to state champ Ariton last season.

In Tuesday’s Game 2, Vincent fell behind 1-0 in the first inning before tying it at 1 in the second. Mars Hill pulled ahead 4-1 after 2 innings before Vincent knotted the game at 4 with 3 runs in the top of the third. The Yellow Jackets exploded for 5 runs in the fifth inning, 4 more in the sixth, after a Mars Hill run in the bottom of the fifth, and another in the seventh for the final margin.
Vincent pounded out 12 hits and overcame 7 errors in the nightcap. Mars Hill had 3 hits with 3 errors.
Calvin Johnson earned the win after relieving starter Landon Archer with no outs in the second inning. Johnson allowed 2 runs – 1 earned – on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts and 6 walks. Archer allowed 4 unearned runs on a hit with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Air Force Academy commitment and statewide Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Aiden Poe went 2-for-3 with a double and 5 RBIs in the win. Grayson Gulde was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Archer was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Leadoff batter Casen Fields went 3-for-5 and scored 3 runs for Vincent.
Oakley Bevis was 1-for-1 with an RBI for Mars Hill. Brooks Campbell and Grant Robbins had the Panthers’ other two hits.
Cole Agee, the third of four Mars Hill pitchers, took the loss. Agee allowed 5 runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 1 inning. Starter Beau Willis allowed 4 runs – 3 earned – on 1 hit with a strikeout and 4 walks in 2 innings. Winn Crook worked a scoreless inning with no hits in relief of Willis, with 2 walks. Malen Moore pitched the final 3 innings, allowing 5 runs – 3 earned – on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk.
In Game 1, Mars Hill Bible broke on top with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, gave up what proved to be the Yellow Jackets’ lone run in the bottom of the second and added an insurance run in the third.
The Panthers had 4 hits to 3 for Vincent and overcame 3 errors in the game.
Starting pitcher and leadoff man Noah Hanback earned the win, allowing an earned run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk in 6 innings. Freed-Hardeman commitment Cam Isbell got the save, pitching a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout. Hanback also had one of the Panthers’ hits.
Cody Willis opened the second inning for Mars Hill with a single, took second when William Mann walked and third on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Fowler. Willis scored on a Moore ground out. Mann made it 2-0 when he came across on a passed ball.
Vincent answered in the bottom of the inning when Gulde singled, went to second on an error on his hit and third on a single by Ethan McElrath. Gulde scored on a Mars Hill wild pitch.
Hanback singled to open the third inning, courtesy runner Christian O’Rear went to second on a ground out and scored on a single by Isbell for the final margin.
Poe took the loss for Vincent, allowing 3 runs – 2 earned – on 4 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 1 in the complete-game effort.
McElrath had 2 of Vincent’s 3 hits.
Mars Hill has won five state titles, the first coming in back-to-back seasons in Class 1A in 1977 and ’78. The Panthers added another in 2010, a fourth in 2012 and the fifth in 2019. Vincent has two state championships, in 1984 as a 2A school and in 1985 in Class 3A.

Bibb County 3-2, Oak Grove 2-1
Sixth-ranked Bibb County won both games with seventh-inning runs, including a 2-out RBI single for the win in Game 2 to earn the sweep of the top-ranked Tigers in semifinal play at Oak Grove.
Bibb County (29-10) will play in the state championship next week against the winner of the Deshler-Etowah series.
Bibb County pitcher Ethan McMillan provided the Game 2 winning hit after Bodie Giddiens started the rally with a 2-out single.
McMillan allowed only 2 hits, striking out 5 and walking 2 in the complete-game victory.
Giddiens was 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the first inning to give Bibb County a 1-0 lead.
Olen Bryant had an RBI single while Kyler Pollastrini had the only other hit for Oak Grove (30-5).
Bibb County won Game 1 when Landan Shoults stroked a 2-out run-scoring single to break a 2-all tie in the top of the seventh.
Shoults was 2-for-4 while Jordan Leverette was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Starter Macain McMillan got the win, allowing 8 hits and striking out 6 in 6 innings.
Oak Grove’s Wiley Hicks was 2-for-4 and Brawley Burns was 2-for-3. Jay Fuller and Colton Praytor had run-scoring singles.
