Walton Goggins

Walton Goggins, a Birmingham native, has been dominating TV screens on Sundays with his must-watch performances on HBO’s “The White Lotus” and “The Righteous Gemstones.” Season 3 of “The White Lotus” earned plenty of buzz — and is still streaming on MAX — but right now, we’re all about Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman on “Gemstones.” Goggins is a marvel on the comedy series, playing a former child star who continues his quest for success in hilarious ways. Episode after episode, Baby Billy creates his own brand of chaos in a family of dysfunctional televangelists.

Goggins, 53, previously earned acclaim as Boyd Crowder, a charismatic villain who leaps off the the screen in “Justified,” an FX series that aired for six seasons, 2010-2015. He also got fans talking with his portrayal of Cooper “The Ghoul” Howard in “Fallout,” a post-apocalyptic series on Amazon Prime.

The actor has received two Emmy nominations to date, in 2011 for “Justified” and in 2024 for “Fallout.” Goggins has a long list of TV credits that includes roles in “George & Tammy,” “Vice Principals,” “The Shield,” “Sons of Anarchy” and more. He’s also appeared in movies such as “Django Unchained,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Hateful Eight.”

Next up: Goggins is set to host “Saturday Night Live” on May 10, with music guest Arcade Fire.

Michael Rooker

Michael Rooker

If you need a bad guy, Michael Rooker is your man. The actor, a Jasper native, has forged a highly successful career in movies and TV by playing villains, scoundrels, lawbreakers and anti-heroes. Consider, for example, his breakthrough role as the chilling protagonist of 1986’s “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.” Rooker followed that with a long list of “black hat” credits, including Merle Dixon in AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” Edward Hoyt in “True Detective,” Savant in “The Suicide Squad” and Yondu Udonta in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.

Rooker, 70, recently popped up on “The Righteous Gemstones,” playing Cobb Milsap, the brutish ex-husband of a woman who’s been romancing Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), the patriarch of an unruly family of televangelists. Rooker’s character on the HBO series is trouble all the way — menacing his former spouse, harassing the Gemstone clan and much more. Once again, Rooker portrays the guy we love to hate, and his comeuppance on the show — at a wild animal park, no less — is well worth the wait.

Katy Sullivan

Katy Sullivan, a Tuscaloosa native, has earned fame for her work on Broadway — where she earned a 2023 Tony nomination — and her roles in prestigious regional theaters. She’s also appeared on TV shows such as “Dexter: New Blood,” “Station 19″ and “NCIS: New Orleans.”

Now, the actress can be seen on Season 4 of “Hacks,” HBO’s hit comedy series. Sullivan, 45, portrays a writer who’s been hired to create jokes and skits for Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), an abrasive comedienne and longtime Las Vegas star. Deborah has another world to conquer this season — late-night TV — and she’s determined to succeed as the host of her own show. Sullivan’s character, Carla, is one of several writers adjusting to a work life with Deborah, who minces no words and takes no prisoners. Meantime, tension mounts between Deborah and her head writer and frenemy, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder).

Along with her acting career, Sullivan is an athlete and former Paralympian, competing in track and field events for Team USA. Born without the lower halves of both legs, she trained on blades and became a four-time champion in the 100-meter run, according to her website.

She plays a tough-as-nails bounty hunter who’s also the mother of the main character, Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon). Kitty Halloran loves her flawed son enough to help him chase down demons — after Hub dies and is brought back by the devil so he can perform this gruesome job.

Yep, it’s a horror series, and Grant is prominently featured in every episode. Amid all the fire and brimstone (and copious amounts of gore), she makes her character sympathetic and believable. Grant, 75, a veteran character actress, has an extensive resume of movie and TV credits, including roles in “The Mindy Project,” “Mayfair Witches,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and more.

Roy Wood Jr.

Roy Wood Jr. has forged a stellar career in the entertainment world, and he’s not done yet. The comedian, who grew up in Birmingham, was a force to be reckoned with on “The Daily Show,” where he served as a correspondent, 2015-2023, and guest host for the series on Comedy Central.

Wood’s latest gig is on CNN, hosting the Saturday night series “Have I Got News For You.” The show, which made its debut in September 2024, is CNN’s version of a popular British series. It’s heavy on political satire and organized like a game show, with several rounds that focus on current events. Wood, 46, oversees the comic mayhem, aided by Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black. Two seasons of “Have I Got News for You” are available on HBO’s Max streamer, and Wood has said the show will return in fall 2025.

Wood’s resume also includes a 2010 stint as a contestant on “Last Comic Standing,” a role on the sitcom “Sullivan & Son,” appearances on late-night talk shows, comedy specials and albums, movie roles, podcasts and more. In 2023, he was the featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Michael O'Neill

Michael O’Neill

Michael O’Neill, a Montgomery native, has a resume that any character actor would be proud to claim. He’s played heroes and villains, senators and cops, judges and sheriffs in a long list of movies and TV shows. Typically, O’Neill is cast as a strong authority figure — and that holds true for his role on “Happy Face,” a crime drama streaming on Paramount+.

In the series, O’Neill portrays Craig Calloway, an imperious district attorney in Texas. He’s at odds with the show’s main character, Melissa Reed (Annaleigh Ashford), the tormented daughter of a serial killer (Dennis Quaid). She asks the DA to reopen a 30-year-old murder case after her father, known as the Happy Face Killer, has confessed to the crime. This could potentially free an innocent man who’s been convicted, but the DA is skeptical, resisting the idea and hatching plans of his own.

With this role, O’Neill, 73, adds to a resume that includes TV series such as “The West Wing,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and more. He’s also appeared in movies such as “Seabiscuit,” “Transformers,” “Sea of Love” and “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Jay Woods of Florence is one of four men looking for love on Season 3 of the FOX reality series “Farmer Wants a Wife.” Woods, 25, is a hay and cattle farmer in Lauderdale County. He has his own 15-acre spread, which means a significant part of the new season was filmed in Alabama. Woods — a former football player for Florence High School, the University of Michigan and Duke University — has been romancing five women on the show, trying to find a soulmate who’ll be a good fit for his life in Alabama.

Viewers have seen Woods slowly trimming the list of candidates, after transporting the women to his property for dates, chores and getting-to-know-you sessions. By mid-season, he’s sent three women home, kept two front-runners and added one latecomer recommended by his mother. Will Woods find a partner who loves “family, faith and football”? Stay tuned.
