Experienced Elberta baseball team looking to continue historic playoff run
It’s already been a historic run for the Elberta High baseball team, and it might not be finished just yet.
The Warriors (24-7) travel to No. 10 Marbury (28-6) for a Class 5A quarterfinal baseball series beginning Friday.
“If we continue to play like we are capable of playing, I think we can give ourselves a chance in any series,” third-year coach Owen Davis said. “I know we will have to beat some really good teams, but if we can do what we do and control what we can control, we’ve got a chance.”

Elberta has advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in the school’s short history with home sweeps of Eufaula and Demopolis. The next step is to win on the road. Marbury has advanced with sweeps of Shelby County and No. 6 Faith Academy.
“We’ve been on the road in the first round the last two years and competed well,” Davis said. “We went to Sylacauga two years ago and lost a pair of 1-run games. Last year, we went to Valley. We knocked (ace) Jackson Sanders out of the game and had a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh and just didn’t get it done.
“That’s been a big difference for us this year. When we have games when we get behind or something negative happens, we’ve had that mentality of, ‘So what? Let’s move on to the next play.’ We haven’t had that all the time in the past. I guess it’s just maturity for the most part. It’s been fun to watch.”
Davis has an experienced team that includes nine seniors, eight of whom have been with the coach since he took over the program three years ago. Two other major contributors are juniors.
“We had high expectations going into the season because of that leadership factor, but in baseball you just never know what might happen,” Davis said.
The coach points to several pivotal moments in the season that gave the Warriors confidence: A 7-1 win at perennial Class 7A contender Central-Phenix City on March 7 and a series win against UMS-Wright April 3-4.
Starting pitching has been a key. Brady Harrison is 11-1 on the year with a .045 ERA. Adan Ramey is 6-1 with a 1.24 ERA. The Warriors have shown plenty of offensive firepower as well. Ramey is hitting .407 to lead the team. Allred is batting .401.
“We are hitting .322 as a team,” Davis said. “I’m not sure I’ve ever had a team that has hit for that high an average as a whole. We struggled a little early on the defensive side, but we’ve started to pick it up a little lately.”
Davis said Marbury looks like a solid team that compares well with Elberta. The best-of-3 series starts with a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
