Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs names his Mount Rushmore of Alabama running backs
Josh Jacobs is the most recent of the Alabama alumni who have earned the NFL rushing crown. Jacobs led the league in rushing yards in 2022, following Shaun Alexander in 2005 and Derrick Henry in 2019 and 2020 as former Crimson Tide ball-barriers who have topped the NFL in rushing yards.
When asked to name the four best running backs in Alabama history, Jacobs included Alexander and Henry, but not himself.
“Who’s the rushing leader?” Jacobs said when asked for his Crimson Tide Mount Rushmore of running backs during an appearance on this week’s “The Pivot Podcast.” “Shaun Alexander, I think’s the rushing leader, so you got to put Shaun Alexander. Derrick Henry, obviously, in there. See, where it gets tricky is like: Do you put Trent or do you put – I would say Trent Richardson. You can throw Trent Richardson in there. And I’ll probably say Eddie Lacy. …
“I forgot about Mark (Ingram). Definitely Mark. Definitely Mark as my fourth.”

Jacobs is officially incorrect about Alexander holding Alabama’s career rushing record. But he’s not wrong either.
Alexander recorded 3,565 yards and 41 touchdowns on 727 rushing attempts for the Crimson Tide. Henry completed his Alabama career with 3,591 rushing yards, and Najee Harris surpassed that with 3,843 for the Tide.
But Alexander played at a time when bowl statistics did not count in the official individual numbers. Alexander had 315 rushing yards in bowls, and if his bowl numbers are included in his tally, as they are for Henry and Harris, he had 37 more rushing yards in his Alabama career than any other Crimson Tide ball-carrier.
Alexander completed his Alabama career in 1999. Ingram played his last season in 2010, Richardson in 2011 and Henry in 2015. Jacobs left Alabama after the 2019 season and Harris after the 2020 season.
Jacobs said he favored the running backs that preceded him and Harris in making his picks.
“The reason I don’t put none of the younger guys is I feel like the game was different when they played,” Jacobs said. “And they really created the, what we call, Bama legacy.”
Last offseason, Jacobs left the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency to sign with the Green Bay Packers. In 2024, Jacobs ran for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns on 301 carries and received this third Pro Bowl invitation.
