AISA Baseball Roundup: Macon-East stays alive with steal of home

Micah Andrews stole him in the bottom of the seventh inning as Macon-East salvaged a split with Clarke Prep in the AISA Class AA semifinals at Paterson Field in Montgomery.

Andrews’ heroics capped a 4-3 Macon-East win in Game 2. Clarke Prep won the first game of the day by the same score. The two teams will play Game 3 in Montgomery on Wednesday.

The second game was tied 3-3 in the seventh. With one out, Andrews singled to left. He went to third on Jackson Todd’s two-out single to right. On a 1-2 pitch to Patrick Ernst, Andrews raced home, sliding safely in just ahead of the tag on a high pitch to the plate.

Andrews was 3-for-4 in the game for the Knight (26-14). Todd had a pair of hits and an RBI. He also got the win on the mound, going the distance and scattering 9 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 2.

John Allen Powell went the distance for the Gators. He also scattered 9 hits. He struck out 5 and walked 2. He also was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Connor Bumpers had 2 hits and an RBI.

In Game 1, Clarke Prep outhit Macon-East 7-3 and held on to win a close one.

Cooper Clemmons and Powell each had 2 hits for the Gators (26-5). Starter Tanner Bayles pitched 6.2 innings to get the win. He allowed 3 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 7 and walked 8. Clemmons got the final out for the save.

Ernest drove in 2 runs for Macon-East. Bryant Grimes took the loss on the mound, allowing 4 runs – 2 earned – on 7 hits. He struck out 8 and walked 2.
