Shedeur Sanders draft prank-caller identified as son of NFL assistant coach
The 21-year-old son of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been identified as one of two young men who prank-called Shedeur Sanders on Friday night, falsely informing him he’d been drafted by the New Orleans Saints.
Jax Ulbrich obtained the number Sanders had given out only to NFL teams off an iPad at his parents’ home, according to a statement released by the team. Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of his son’s actions until after the fact, the statement said.
“The Atlanta Falcons do not condone this behavior and send or sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family, who we have been in contact with to apologize to,” the statement read in part. “… We have also been in contact with the NFL and will continue to cooperate fully with an inquiries we may receive from the NFL league office. We are thoroughly reviewing all protocols, and updating if necessary, to help prevent an incident like this from happening again.”
Sanders — the former Colorado star and son of NFL legend Deion Sanders — was widely projected to be a first-round pick in last week’s NFL draft, but was not selected until the Cleveland Browns took him in the fifth round on Saturday. His slide became the biggest story surrounding the draft, with the prank call — video of which was widely distributed on social media — an indelible part of a narrative.
Jax Ulbrich released his own statement, apologizing directly to Sanders, via Instagram on Sunday. He called his action “completely inexcusable, embarrassing and shameful.”
“On Friday night I made a tremendous mistake,” the apology read. “Shedeur, what I did was completely inexcusable, embarrassing and shameful. I’m so sorry I took away from your moment, it was selfish and childish. I could never imagine getting ready to celebrate one of the greatest moments of your life and I made a terrible mistake and messed with that moment.
“Thank your for accepting my call earlier today, I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.”
Jeff Ulbrich, a former NFL linebacker, is in his first season as Falcons defensive coordinator. He previously worked for the Falcons from 2015-2020, and spent the last four seasons as defensive coordinator of the New York Jets (serving as interim coach for the final 12 games of the season after head coach Robert Saleh was fired).
