Man shot to death at Huntsville apartment complex

A man is dead after a shooting at an apartment complex in Huntsville on Saturday night.

Paramedics were called to Westlake Apartments on Sparkman Drive around 7:15 p.m., according to Don Webster of Huntsville Emergency Medical Services.

They found a 31-year-old man that had been shot. He was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at the scene just after 7:30 p.m., according to Madison County Coroner Tyler Berryhill.

Berryhill said his name won’t be released until his family has been notified.

Huntsville police are still investigating. The department’s major crimes unit was called to the scene, according to WHNT. Police have not released any information about suspects.

The department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AL.com on Sunday morning.

A registered nurse who lives across the street told WAFF she heard a gunshot followed by someone screaming. Police asked her to assist in providing CPR, she told the TV station, but the man was already dead by the time she got to him.

Emergency medical services were also called to the apartment complex earlier Saturday evening to assist someone experiencing a drug overdose, but Webster said the two incidents were not related.
