Birmingham father run over, killed as children watched in horror ‘put his kids before everything’

Mickese Bostic did everything big.

He loved hard. He worked tirelessly. He valued family above all else.

So when the 27-year-old Birmingham man decided to throw a gathering to celebrate both Easter and his youngest daughter’s 7th birthday, he went all out.

There was a moonwalk, a waterslide, an Easter egg hunt and enough slabs of ribs for the up to 50 people who joined the day-long party.

“He loved doing things big,” said his sister, Katherine Bostic. “He was the biggest guy of them all.”

“It was a magnificent day,” she said. “I wish I could do it again.”

The joy of that day turned to heartache when police say Mickese’s longtime girlfriend and the mother of his two of his children killed him by running him over with her SUV, pinning him between the vehicle and his house.

Mickese died on the scene, a horrific death witnessed by those who loved him most, including his kids. In addition to his three, he was also raising the suspect’s two children from a previous relationship.

His girlfriend, 30-year-old Shatice Renae Jackson, is charged with capital murder. The charge is capital because Mickese was killed in front of his children.

Jackson is set to make her first court appearance on Wednesday.

“We saw everything. The kids saw everything,” Katherine said. “All five of the kids were in the truck when she ran over him and killed him.”

“It was awful,‘’ said his older sister, Brennita Bostic. “We tried to save him.”

The ordeal began just before 10 p.m. Sunday at Bostic’s home in the 700 block of Lisa Lane in the Roebuck Springs area.

East Precinct officers were initially dispatched on a report of shots fired at the home.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the call was updated to say that the female was trying to run over the victim.

When officers arrived, they learned that Jackson did hit Mickese with a vehicle, and the victim was trapped between the vehicle and a house.

“The crowd of family members was visibly upset,” he said. “Officers put out a max emergency because they couldn’t get the crowd under control.”

Responding officers from all four of the city’s precincts were warned of someone with a gun, but Fitzgerald said no shots were fired once police were on the scene.

More than 25 police cars responded.

“Officers from every precinct came to the scene,” he said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service also responded to the neighborhood and helped remove the trapped victim. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:21 p.m.

“It was extremely traumatic,” Brennita said.

Fitzgerald said investigators learned the woman fired shots inside the house before police arrived.

“There was a fight inside of the house. Shots were fired inside of the house,” he said. “The victim left, and we were told she ran him over with the car.”

Fitzgerald confirmed that police had been dispatched to the home earlier in the evening on a domestic dispute involving the couple.

“That was a situation where there was nothing criminal that took place,” he said. “Our officers had no arrestable charges, and both parties were allowed to go their separate ways.”

Police said Jackson later returned to the victim’s house and that’s when the deadly dispute took place.

“We tried to tell officers it wasn’t over,” Katherine said. “She stated she was going to come back.”

“Ten minutes later we were calling (police),” she said. “My brother was under the truck.”

The family prays Mickese didn’t suffer and are now trying to figure out what the future holds without him.

“There’s no going on without him,” Katherine said. “He’s always going to be with us. We’ve got to live for him and through him now.”

Mickese was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and had worked for Jefferson County for nearly a decade. He had served as an officer in the juvenile court, and his sisters said he was extremely driven and energetic.

“He loved his job,” Katherine said. “He’d stay at work 48 hours, 72 hours, no sleep. That’s all he did was work.”

Outside of work, his sisters said he was the life of the party.

“He was a very honest person,” Brennita said. “He was loving, and he never met a stranger.”

“He just loved being around people,” Katherine said.

His family said they want him to be remembered for the love and devotion he had for others.

“He was a real man,” Brennita said.

“He put his kids before everything,” Katherine said.

As for the suspect, “He loved that girl to death,” Katherine said. “That’s why he never left her.”
