Alabama officials rehearsing today to reverse I-65 traffic in case of hurricane

Representatives from the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and local agencies will conduct a hurricane preparation lane-reversal simulation today on I-65 from Mobile to Montgomery, according to a recent release.

There should be no traffic impacts, it says, but drivers may see activity from these agencies along the I-65 corridor.

When personnel are present along the road, drivers should use caution and keep a safe distance, according to ALDOT.

“Hurricane season begins June 1 and will end Nov. 30,” the release reads.

“The annual contraflow exercise provides agencies a dress rehearsal opportunity in advance of hurricane season to help ensure an event will be executed safely.”

In the event of an evacuation situation, ALDOT says it would convert all lanes on I-65 to the northbound direction from Mobile to Montgomery.

Interstate lane reversal, or “contraflow,” is designed to accommodate the significant increase in northbound traffic as hurricane evacuees travel out of the path of the hurricane, according to the release.

The reversal has been done successfully repeatedly in the past, including before Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Dennis in 2005.
