Is Trump replacing Hegseth? GOP leader says he should go; White House calls NPR report ‘fake news’
A leading House Republican on Monday suggested Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should no longer be in charge of the Pentagon as the White House slammed a report that it is vetting potential successors as “fake news.”
“I’m not going to tell the White House how to manage this … but I find it unacceptable, and I wouldn’t tolerate it if I was in charge‚” Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., who chairs the House Armed Services Committee’s Cyber, Information Technologies and Innovation Subcommittee, told Politico’s Rachel Bade.
Hegseth, who faced scrutiny last month after it was revealed he divulged Yemen attack plans in a private group chat that included a magazine reporter, is now embroiled in a similar scandal involving his brother, wife and personal attorney.
“He’s acting like he’s above the law — and that shows an amateur person,” Bacon said.
Earlier Monday, both President Donald Trump and Karoline Leavitt said Hegseth has the White House’s support to continue as defense secretary.
“He’s doing a great job … ask the Houthis how he’s doing, ask the Houthis how much dysfunction they have. Pete’s doing a great job, everybody’s happy with him,” Trump said at the White House Easter Egg Roll.
Meanwhile, NPR reported the White House “has begun the process of looking for a new secretary of defense,” citing an anonymous U.S. official.
Trump slammed the report as “fake news.”
“Lies from NPR — which, as we all know, is a Fake News propaganda machine,” the White House tweeted Monday afternoon.
On Sunday, The New York Times reported Hegseth shared Yemen attack plans in a Signal group chat that included his wife, brother and personal attorney.
“Some of those people said that the information Mr. Hegseth shared on the Signal chat included the flight schedules for the F/A-18 Hornets targeting the Houthis in Yemen — essentially the same attack plans that he shared on a separate Signal chat the same day that mistakenly included the editor of The Atlantic,” The Times reported.
