Some Social Security beneficiaries will get 2 checks in May: Here’s why

Some Social Security recipients will receive two payments in May, thanks to a quirk of a calendar.

People who receive Supplemental Security Income will get their benefits on May 1 and May 30. The May 1 payment is on its regular date but the May 30 date is two days early and that’s due to the first of June falling on a Sunday. SSI payments are typically made on the first of the month but are moved if the 1st falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a federal holiday.

That means SSI recipients – typically low-income seniors or people living with disabilities – will get two payments in May and none in June.

The same scenario will occur in August when SSI payments will be delivered on Aug. 1 and against on Aug. 29 due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 1 and in October when payments will be made on Wednesday, Oct. 1 and Friday, Oct. 31 due to Nov. 1 falling on a Saturday.

December has two SSI payments as well – Monday, Dec. 1 and Wednesday, Dec. 31 due to the New Year’s Day holiday on Jan. 1, 2026.

Regular Social Security payments are on a different schedule based on the recipient’s day of birth.

Benefits are paid on the second Wednesday of the month for those born on the 1st through the 10th. People born 11th – 20th are paid on the third Wednesday of the month; people born 21st – 31st are paid on fourth Wednesday of the month.

People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 or are receiving both Social Security and SSI receive split payments – Social Security on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.
