Spring sports roundup: Grissom whips rival Huntsville in baseball finale

Eighth-ranked Class 7A Grissom wrapped up a two-game Area 7 sweep of city rival Huntsville High School with a 7-1 win over the Crimson Panthers on Saturday. The Tigers won the first game of the series 7-3 at home on Thursday to clinch the area championship for the second consecutive season.

University of South Alabama commitment Charlie Cassingham struck out 11 Huntsville batters on the way to a 4-hit complete-game win on Saturday. Cassingham gave up an earned run and did not walk a batter. Batting leadoff, the senior was 0-for-2, but he drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to put the Tigers up 5-1.

Grissom’s Braydon Weaver went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run and Dalton Dardin smacked a pair of doubles with 2 RBIs in 4 at-bats. Griffin Grigsby was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and No. 9 hitter Grayson Stroble went 2-for-2.

Josh Knight, Alex Cothren, Wyatt Howell and William Carter had singles for Huntsville. Starter Reece Thomas took the loss, giving up 4 runs – 1 earned – on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk in 5.1 innings.

Grissom will host No. 7 Hoover for a doubleheader on Friday at 4:30 p.m. to open the Class 7A state playoffs. A third game, if necessary, will be Saturday at 1 p.m.

Bob Jones 9-6, James Clemens 4-4

The second-ranked Patriots swept Madison City Schools rival James Clemens in a Class 7A, Area 8 doubleheader on Saturday. Bob Jones beat the Jets 6-3 on the road on Thursday to wrap up the area title.

In Saturday’s opener, Bob Jones third baseman Tanner Hermesch was 2-for-3 with a 2-run home run, a double and 3 RBIs and first baseman Cole Spanier was 1-for-1 with a solo homer and 3 RBIs. Robert Chatmon doubled in 3 at-bats.

Winning pitcher Cam Martin was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Patriots and Myles Hammonds singled and drove in a run. University of Alabama signee Zack Johnson also had an RBI in the win.

Martin gave up 4 runs – 2 earned – on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 4 innings.

Ian Berry went 2-for-2 for James Clemens with a double and an RBI. Trip Morgan was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Tyler Lewis took the loss, giving up 5 earned runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and 4 walks in 3 innings.

Bob Jones won Game 2 in walk-off fashion, when Spanier ripped a 3-run home run to left field on a no-out, 1-2 count to score Martin, who had singled, and Johnson, who had walked.

James Clemens had carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning as the two teams got all their runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Jets pushed 3 runs across in the top of the fourth when AJ Kelley drove in Berry with a sac fly to center, Morgan scored on a single and Will Congo scored on a wild pitch.

The Patriots answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Hermesch doubled and scored on a single by Chatmon.

In the fifth, Hayden Udovich walked and scored on a Morgan double to push the Jets’ led to 4-1. The Patriots picked up 2 runs in the bottom of the inning when Hammonds singled, Dillon Adkins doubled him to third and Johnson drove them home with a single to center field.

Hammonds and Johnson were both 2-for-3 for Bob Jones. Johnson also had a double in the win.

Joshua Wilhide got the win in relief of starter Jackson Shaw, working 2.2 innings of hitless and scoreless baseball. He struck out 3 and walked 2. Shaw gave up 4 earned runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks in 4.1 innings.

Morgan was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles for James Clemens. Braden Powless took the loss after relieving Congo, the third Jets’ pitcher on the day, and surrendering Spanier’s home run.

Bob Jones will host Thompson for a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. to open the 7A playoffs. James Clemens travels to Northport to meet Tuscaloosa County in a doubleheader, also at 5 p.m.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Alma Bryant 6, Mary G. Montgomery 2

The Hurricanes, fresh off clinching the Class 7A, Area 1 title with a 5-3 win at Mary G. Montgomery on Thursday, beat the Vikings at home on Friday.

Christian Thompson’s bases-loaded single in the fifth inning lifted Alma Bryant to the Friday win. Thompson’s sharp ground ball scored Brayden Roberts and Jackson Fulton to put Canes up 4-2. Byrant added 2 more runs en route to a 6- run inning. All three of the Canes’ hits on the day came in the fifth.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the first inning. TJ Wood’s single scored Fuller Musgrove and Anderson Murray.

MGM managed 1 hit after the first inning – and 3 total – on a Keelan Moye single in the third.

Hurricanes reliever Cade Phillips earned the win with 2 perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts. Starter Austin Boulch gave up 2 runs on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks over 4 innings.

Mary G. Montgomery starter Cody Strickhausen allowed 5 runs – 2 earned – on a hit with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks as the 11-16-1 Vikings finished the season on a seven-game losing streak.

Alma Bryant (19-11) will host Auburn in a first-round playoff doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m.

Thompson 10, Gardendale 2

The top-ranked Class 7A Warriors went 3-1 in the Hoover Classic over the weekend, winning a pair of games on Friday before beating Gardendale and falling 7-0 to 4A No. 1 Orange Beach to close out the tournament on Saturday. Thompson is 35-4 on the season and is scheduled to host Jasper on Tuesday to in its regular-season finale.

Against Gardendale, Thompson scored a run in the bottom of the first and 3 in the second, third and fifth inning of the 6-inning game. The Rockets scored their runs in the top of the fifth. Thompson out-hit Gardendale 7-1, with starter Aubree Hooks throwing 4 hitless innings with 7 strikeouts and no walks before reliever Bailey Holderfield gave up 2 unearned runs on a hit with 2 strikeouts and a walk in 2 innings.

The Warriors used 18 players in the tournament. Hannah Hobbs went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Blakely Davis, Olivia Tindell, Autumn Ingle, Morgan Adolphus, Alexia Kelley and Scarlett Flournoy all had an RBI in the win.

ZoeClaire Caufield had Gardendale’s lone hit in 2 at-bats and scored a run. Ally Davis also scored for the Rockets. Bailey Snow, the first of five Gardendale pitchers, took the loss. She allowed 4 runs – 3 earned – on 4 hits with 2 walks in 2 innings.

On Friday, Thompson topped 7A No. 10 Austin, 6-3 and 6A Hazel Green 10-1.

Against Austin, the Warriors trailed 2-0 after an inning before pushing across 5 in the top of the second. Jillian Kato had a 2-run double, Whitney Holtzapfel drove in a run and Ingle brought in 2 with a single. The Black Bears answered with a run in the fourth before Thompson closed out the scoring with a run in the fifth.

Hobbs was 2-for-3 for the Warriors and Adolphus went 2-for-2. Ingle picked up the win in the circle in relief of starter Hooks. Ingle no-hit Austin for 2.1 innings with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks. Hooks gave up 2 earned runs on no hits with 5 walks and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. Kelley worked the final 2 innings, allowing an earned run on 2 hits with a walk.

Arden Breedlove and Evelyn Lamb had singles for Austin. Lamb took the loss, allowing 6 runs – 5 earned – on 7 hits with 5 walks in 4 innings.

Also on Friday, the Warriors whipped Hazel Green 10-1 as four pitchers combined for a 1-hitter. Starter Ingle earned the win, working 1.1 scoreless innings with no hits and a strikeout. Kelley gave up an earned run on a hit with a walk over 1.2 innings. Hooks worked a scoreless inning with 2 strikeouts and a walk and Holderfield finished with 2 strikeouts in a hitless inning.

Hooks went 2-for-3 with a solo home run for Thompson. Hobbs and Tindell had a double each. Hobbs was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Tindell was 1-for-1 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Kadyn Bush was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Kaley Riggs was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for Hazel Green. McKenzie Thomas took the loss, allowing 10 runs – 7 earned – on 8 hits with 2 walks in 3 innings.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Orange Beach 7, Thompson 0

In a battle of top-ranked teams, Class 4A Orange Beach whipped 7A Thompson in 4 innings on Saturday in the Hoover Classic. KG Favors pitched a 2-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks and had one of four home runs for the Makos.

Favors was 1-for-4 with an RBI, University of Arkansas-bound Ava Hodo homered in 2 at-bats with 2 RBIs, Katie King went 2-for-2 with a homer and a double and 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored and Kaitlynn Robertson had a home run in 2 at-bats with an RBI.

Adelynn Oldham and Lily Poland had doubles in the win.

Hannah Hobbs and Whitney Holtzapfel had a single each for Thompson. Starter Kadyn Bush worked 1.1 innings and gave up 5 earned runs on 5 hits with a strikeout.

Satsuma 6, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 2

The eighth-ranked Class 4A Gators wrapped up a 2-0-1 finish in the Hoover Classic at the Hoover Met on Saturday with the win over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

Madison Sawyer doubled and drove in 2 runs to pace Satsuma. Sawyer doubled in the first inning to score Brittaney Jones and Addison Taylor and scored on a Bralee Byrd double. The Gators had 3 hits in the game – all doubles – and took advantage of 5 walks and a pair of errors by Hillcrest.

Jessie Hartley led the Patriots with a pair of hits and Marti McClusky drove in 2 with a double in the third inning.

Anna Bonds picked up the win for the Gators, surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings.

Satsuma tied Spain Park 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Friday. Lily Cunningham drove in the 2 runs to salvage the tie when she reached on a 2-out ground ball error that brought in Merrie Tucker and Byrd.

Bonds went 2-for-4 for the Gators with Cunningham and Byrd also getting hits.

Starter Belle Sheffield gave up 2 runs – 1 earned – on 6 hits with a strikeout in 2.2 innings. Sawyer finished the game, allowing an earned run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk in 3.1 innings.

Chloe Wade and Jaley Young had 2 hits apiece for Spain Park and Allie Whitaker and Maxie Provost getting a double each. Young and T Lasseter picked up an RBI each.

Young started in the circle for the Jaguars, giving up an unearned run on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts and 4 walks. Provost allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2 innings.

Satsuma opened the Classic with a 5-0 win over Huntsville on Friday as Sawyer retired 15 of the first 16 batters she faced. The senior struck out 10 and gave up 2 hits in the complete-game win. Sawyer helped herself at the plate with a 3-run home run in the fifth inning that brought in Jones and Taylor.

Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Bonds had a double in 2 at-bats.

Caylee Cowan took the loss for Huntsville, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings. Amya Duster had a double and Cowan singled for the Panthers.

Satsuma improved to 23-14-3 on the year and will wrap up the regular season with road games at Daphne and Fairhope on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Prattville Christian 3, T.R. Miller 1

The ninth-ranked Class 4A Panthers went 2-0 in their Prattville Christian Spring Fling with the win over 3A No. 8 T.R. Miller and an 8-3 win over 6A Pelham on Saturday.

Prattville Christian improved to 32-6 and will host Saint James on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Laura Beth NeSmith struck out 7 and gave up 4 hits in the win over T.R. Miller. Leadoff hitter Saniyah Weaver went 3-for-3 with a triple as PCA scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and gave up a run in the sixth.

Peyton Thrash was 2-for-3 and had a pair of RBIs in the win.

Meg Fountain homered on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the sixth for the Tigers. Kylee Walton took the loss, giving up 3 runs – 2 earned – on 6 hits with a strikeout and no walks over 4 innings.

Alivia Messick, AUM softball signee, struck out 11 Pelham batters in the win over the visitors from Shelby County. Messick gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits over 7 innings.

Chloe Hollon went 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs for PCA. Holley Beth Rollan had 2 RBIs and 2 hits in 4 at-bats. Chasiti Lindsey went 2-for-3 and Caralee Janes finished 2-for-4.

Jordan Young went 2-for-3 for Pelham and Rebecca Roy drove in a pair of runs. Young also took the loss, allowing 6 runs – 3 earned – on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk over 4 innings.
