Alabama university students, staff see immigration visas revoked: Reports
Auburn University students and staff have been caught up in President Donald Trump’s efforts to curb immigration.
Fifteen students and staff have been notified their visas were revoked by the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, according to news reports.
Auburn University did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AL.com.
“I believe they’ve become victims because they’re like a political ping pong ball and this is a bipartisan problem,” Sue Ann Balch, former assistant director of International Programs at Auburn, told WVTM.
Auburn’s Office of International Programs “immediately contacted each affected individual to provide assistance and support. Our international students and personnel are valued members of our campus community, and we recognize the significant impact that visa or status revocation will have on them,” Jennifer Adams, public relations head at Auburn, said, in news reports.
“We encourage our international students and personnel to contact the Office of International Programs with any questions or concerns. We will continue to comply with all applicable laws and cooperate with authorities as required. This is a fluid situation, and the university will monitor it closely and assess its implications.”
The identities of the students and staff weren’t immediately available, according to the Alabama Reflector.
Auburn had about 1,500 international students enrolled in the fall of last year, according to the school’s institutional advancement report. International students represent about 5% of the total student body population.
At least one other international student in the state, Alireza Doroudi, a graduate student at the University of Alabama, also has been targeted by immigration enforcement. He was detained in March and currently faces deportation to Iran.
More than 1,000 people in the United States have had their visas revoked recently, according to Inside Higher Ed, which is tracking the revocations nationwide.
