Sen. Raphael Warnock to preach at historic Dexter Avenue church

U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia will deliver the sermon Sunday at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery as part of the church’s Black History Month programming.

Warnock has been senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta for more than 16 years. That’s the same Atlanta church where Martin Luther King Jr. served as co-pastor under his father from 1960 until King was assassinated in 1968. Before that, King led what was then Dexter Avenue Baptist in Montgomery, where he rose to the forefront of the civil rights movement.

Sunday’s service is from 10:30 a.m. to noon and is open to the public and people of all faiths.

Warnock, who grew up in a public housing project in Savannah, became the first Black person elected to the U.S. Senate from Georgia in a special election in January 2021. A Democrat, he was re-elected to a full term last year, defeating Republican Herschel Walker.
