AL.com fans choose their boys basketball player of the year

Huntsville’s Brayden Rivers survived four rounds of voting by fans to win the first AL.com boys basketball player of the year award.

Rivers defeated Central-Phenix City’s Jacoby Hill in the final. He received 2,956 votes compared to Hill’s 1,264.

Rivers will be awarded with the AL.com trophy for his win.

The 12th seed in the 16-seed bracket, Rivers defeated Oxford’s Jaylen Alexander in the first round, Brantley’s Jayden Parks in the quarterfinals and Ramsay’s Jayden Williams in the semifinals to reach the championship round.

Hill was the tournament’s second seed. Hoover’s DeWayne Brown, the top seed, lost in the opening round to Williams.

Rivers, a senior guard, was a second-team Class 7A All-State selection. He averaged 12.2 points, 7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
