23-year-old woman dies 6 days after shooting inside Birmingham apartment; another woman jailed

A woman died Saturday, six days after she was critically injured in a shooting at south Birmingham apartment.

Another woman has been in custody since surrendering to police on attempted murder charges and now is awaiting a formal murder charge.

Police identified the victim Sunday as Amaiyah Sumlin. She was 23 and lived in Birmingham.

South Precinct officers were dispatched at 6:18 a.m. Sunday, April 6, to a report of a person shot in the 2800 block of Riverview Road, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade. The location is an apartment complex off U.S. 280.

When they arrived at the scene, they found Sumlin wounded. Court documents show she was shot in the head.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the scene and transported the woman to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Sumlin died Saturday, April 12, at 6:22 p.m. at the hospital.

Wade said the preliminary investigation suggests a physical altercation took place at a gathering, resulting in the victim being shot by the suspect who left the scene before officers arrived.

The suspect – 22-year-old Ivry Maria Jelks – later voluntarily surrendered to police officers at the Birmingham Police Headquarters.

Jelks was placed on a 48-hour felony extension at the Birmingham City Jail.

On Monday, April 7, felony assault detectives presented the case information to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, which issued the attempted murder warrant.

Jelks was booked into the Shelby County Jail and remains held on $180,000 bond.

Wade said investigators are now seeking a murder warrant.

Sumlin is Birmingham’s 23rd homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 36 homicides, including 23 in Birmingham.
