5 Auburn football players who stood out during spring practice

Spring practice has officially come to an end for Auburn football following Saturday’s A-Day open practice.

Many key players were limited or held out altogether on Saturday and throughout the spring. For the rest, it was a chance to get some valuable reps, particularly for the newcomers.

Given those opportunities, a number of players impressed throughout spring practice. Here are five that stood out the most.

Sam Turner, WR

There was no freshman who stood out more during this year’s spring practice period than Turner.

He wasn’t a blue-chip recruit out of high school, but he more than held his own over the past three weeks. Turner looked physically mature and made a number of nice plays across various practices that were open to the media.

Turner was also the only freshman receiver on campus this spring, with Derick and Erick Smith not joining until the summer. That could give Turner a slight leg up in an already talented room.

“Man, what a great job by Marcus [Davis] flipping him because he’s going to be dynamic,” head coach Hugh Freeze said of Turner. “For a freshman, he’s sharp. He picks it up.”

Deuce Knight, QB

A five-star prospect in Auburn’s 2025 signing class, Knight came into the spring with plenty of eyes on him. He also got plenty of reps during the spring, with Knight and Jackson Arnold being the only two scholarship quarterbacks on campus.

Knight impressed many of his coaches and teammates during the spring, though, and he got some extended playing time during Auburn’s A-Day open practice on Saturday.

He had a few interceptions Saturday afternoon that Freeze described as out of character, but Knight’s head coach was happy with his spring and A-Day performance overall.

Perry Thompson, WR

Thompson was part of the highly touted “Freeze 4″ group of freshman wide receivers last season, but never quite popped like Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons.

He wasn’t even part of the team last spring, but this year Thompson was one of the standouts during spring practice. Freeze said he talked to Thompson often throughout last season about being patient, and it seems like that paid off this spring.

Thompson was one of the best players on the field during Saturday’s A-Day open practice and could take on a bigger role in the receiver room next season.

AnQuon Fegans, S

Fegans was one of the many blue-chip recruits in Auburn’s 2025 recruiting class, coming from in-state powerhouse Thompson High School.

He’s the second Thompson product to stand out in Auburn’s secondary over the past two years, joining Kaleb Harris who broke out as a freshman in 2024. It’s too early to tell whether or not he’ll have the same kind of impact as Harris, but he made plenty of plays this spring.

Fegans stood out during the A-Day practice too, grabbing one of many interceptions he caught this spring.

Blake Woodby, CB

Continuing the trend of freshman defensive backs, Woodby was another standout for the Tigers during spring practice.

Despite not being the biggest corner on the outside, he flashed some impressive cover skills, even against Auburn’s talented receivers.

“He’s going to be really good in a couple years, if not this year,” said fellow corner Raion Strader. “I think he’s going to be one of them players.”

Auburn is deep at corner, so it may be hard for Woodby to get playing time right away. Either way, he showed that his talent translates to the college level.
