Chicago White Sox call up former Auburn outfielder
After being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of spring training, Joshua Palacios signed a minor-league contract with the Chicago White Sox. But the Auburn alumnus had only a five-game stay with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.
The White Sox called up Palacios on Thursday after losing two outfielders to injuries.
With Andrew Benintendi already on the injured list because of an adductor strain, the White Sox placed Mike Tauchman on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring problem on Thursday.
In an injury-affected 2024, Palacios hit .224 in 23 games with the Pirates and .288 in 59 games in the minors.
Last year, a spring-training calf injury carried into the season. Through May and June, Palacios rehabbed his way from Bradenton to Greensboro to Indianapolis before making his MLB debut for the season on July 4. But a hamstring injury set him back again at the end of the month.
At Auburn, Palacios had a .385 batting average, .463 on-base average and .608 slugging percentage before a wrist injury sidelined him after 34 games in 2016.
After being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth round in 2016, Palacios started his professional career.
Palacios reached the big leagues in 2021, when he played in 13 games for the Blue Jays. The next season, he played in 29 games for the Washington Nationals.
In 2023, Palacios played in 91 games for the Pirates. He hit .239 with 10 home runs and five stolen bases in 264 plate appearances.
In his MLB career, Palacios has a .230 batting average with 12 home runs and seven stolen bases in 156 games.
The White Sox play the Boston Red Sox at 7:40 p.m. CDT Friday at Rate Field in Chicago.
