Trump says Joe Biden was ‘stupid, maybe corrupt’ for letting China ‘get away with murder’ on trade

President Joe Biden was “stupid” and “maybe corrupt” for allowing China to run up a massive trade surplus with the United States, his successor said Wednesday.

President Donald Trump called out his predecessor while saying he did not blame China for the trade imbalance.

“It was sick,” Trump told reporters as he signed executive orders at the White House. “Biden allowed these people to get away with murder. Biden allowed China to just take advantage of us.”

Trump claimed the United States’ trade deficit with China — the president claims it is $1 trillion, although the actual figure is about $263 billion, according to MarketWatch — should have been first addressed more than a decade ago.

“I don’t blame China for what happened. I blame the people sitting right at this desk … for being stupid, incompetent or not having courage. This should’ve been done years ago. This should’ve been done before Obama, in all fairness,” the president said.

“I blame the people sitting at this desk more than I blame China. If China can get away with what they got away with … because our people here were stupid. They were stupid people. Maybe corrupt? I don’t know,” Trump said.

“I don’t know how you can be that stupid. How do you get to be president and then you’re stupid?” the president continued. “But they certainly weren’t courageous, and they allowed this to happen …”
