Alabama fans are used to seeing former Crimson Tide athletes dominate the gridiron on Sundays, but there’s also a rooting interest in the 2025 Masters. Former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas will tee it up in his 10th appearance at Augusta National on Thursday.

Major championship victories in 2017 and 2022 are the highlights of Thomas’ pro career, but he hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in nearly three years. The streak could end this weekend, as Thomas has the eighth-best odds to win the Masters.

Thomas’ +2400 odds to win the Masters are enticing. He’s having a great 2025 season and currently ranks ninth in the FedExCup standings, one spot ahead of Masters odds leader Scottie Scheffler.

However, JT’s recent trips to Augusta National don’t instill much confidence in an outright victory. Thomas has missed the cut in back-to-back years at the Masters and failed to play the weekend in five of the last eight major championships. Since the 2023 PGA Tour season, his best finish in a major was T31 at last year’s British Open.

While I don’t expect Thomas to don the green jacket, finishing in the top 20 is well within reach. He’s made the cut in every event this season, including four top-10 finishes and a pair of second-place finishes.

The most recent runner-up came at the Valspar Championship in late March when Viktor Hovland edged out Thomas by just one stroke.

Playing with confidence is crucial at the Masters, and Thomas’ current form should land him in the top 20 when the final round comes to a close.

This puts a premium on accurate iron and wedge play when shots are heading toward the green, and Thomas ranks eighth on Tour in SG: Approach to the Green.

A well-positioned first shot is crucial in setting up a clean look at the green with an approach shot. Thomas is 111th in SG: Off the Tee, and he’ll need to show early improvement to stay under 71.5 in the first round.

Justin Thomas to beat Xander Schauffele

Some head-to-head Masters betting markets only last through the first round, but Thomas must have a better score than Xander Schauffele when the final round is completed for this wager to cash.

Schauffele’s 2024 season was one to remember. He finally broke through on the biggest stages, winning two majors (PGA Championship and British Open) and finishing top eight at the Masters and U.S. Open. However, there’s reason to believe Xander takes a step back at Augusta this week.

An offseason rib injury has limited Schauffele to only four events this year, resulting in three finishes of T30 or worse. Schauffele is still working to get back in form and ranks 164th in SG: Off the Tee and 166th in SG: Putting.

Augusta National is an unforgiving course that punishes players who aren’t in top form. While Schauffele continues to shake some rust, Thomas’ consistency provides an edge in this matchup.
