In-state defensive back commits to South Alabama for 2026 class

South Alabama landed its second football commitment for the Class of 2026 late Tuesday from Clay-Chalkville defensive back Deon Callins.

Callins (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) totaled 58 tackles, four pass breakups and an interception as a junior for the Cougars, who finished 9-3 last season after winning the Class 6A state championship in 2023. He also has scholarship offers from Troy, Jacksonville State, Samford, Arkansas State and Western Kentucky, among other programs.

Callins’ is South Alabama’s second verbal commitment for the 2026 class, following Louisiana high school offensive lineman Sami Abdelhak last week. The early signing period for high school recruits begins on Dec. 3.
