Severe storms possible Thursday in Alabama: What to expect

More strong to severe storms could be possible in Alabama on Thursday, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service said the main concerns will be damaging winds, hail and heavy rain, but there will also be a low-end risk for a tornado.

Storms will be possible on Thursday from roughly 3 p.m. until midnight in the northern half of the state.

Severe weather isn’t anticipated in south Alabama.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 (slight) risk for severe weather for the northern third of Alabama for Thursday.

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

An area to the south will have a Level 1 (marginal) risk and could have to deal with isolated severe storms.

The weather service said a weak cold front is expected to drop southward into Alabama on Thursday and could set off a few strong to severe storms.

With cold temperatures in place this morning, the weather service will be watching to see if temperatures and moisture levels can rise enough by Thursday afternoon to increase the chances for severe storms.

If strong storms do develop they will likely form north and west of Alabama and drop southward into the state starting Thursday afternoon.

Cooler temperatures are expected by Friday behind the front and could last over the weekend, but a warmup is expected to start next week.

There is no other chance for severe weather in the forecast for Alabama, at least so far, next week.
