Popular sausage part of a ‘high-class I’ recall due to potential for plastic pieces

Illinois-based Johnsonville is recalling approximately 22,672 pounds of cheddar bratwurst because the sausage may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically hard plastic.

According to an announcement from the USDA‘s Food Safety Inspection Service, the cheddar bratwurst was produced on Feb. 5. The product subject to recall is the 19-oz sealed tray package containing five pieces of “Johnsonville Brats Cheddar Bratwurst. The package code is B9FOD.

The recall has been designated as a “high-Class I,” which, according to the USDA, “involves a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

These affected items were shipped to retail locations in Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Officials are concerned that some of the recalled bratwurst may be in consumers’ freezers. People who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and instead should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
